Coworkers are Not Your Friend!
Find friends anywhere outside of work.
I know it may be difficult to find the time to socialize after a long day of work. After hours of traffic and boring shifts, but I need you to remember this fact; The people you work with are not your friends. I recall working overnights at the local truck stop. This new massive travel center was prime to accept both families, group trips, and truckers spending long nights on the road needing the comfort of a shower!
This store was huge, so big that we had to wear headsets to communicate to the various employees around the building. This store was always hectic, and the employees that came and went reflected that! I will attempt to set the scene, stay with me! There’s Jason the tire tech, Beth the shift lead, and Sandy the coworker. It will all make sense soon!
*One night, around 2:36 AM, I am between isles dusting some bottles of diesel oil*
| over the headset I hear |
Jason TTT says: “Hey Beth, I’m gonna slob on your knob!”
Beth TSL responds: “Oh Jason, put your balls back in your pants!”
First off, the context is completely wrong. That’s not how that works. That’s not how any of this works. Secondly, How gross and utterly out of place could someone be.
Disgusted by the above conversation, I go and tell Sandy, my newest coworker in a train of of people, that I am taking my headset off. I told her, if they needed me just find in the corner working!
She takes it upon herself to tell the “authority” and Beth comes FLYING AROUND THE CORNER.
“We don’t pay you to not have your headset in!”
SHE was not paying me anything, her name was not on my check
Anyway, I let Beth grotesque self go about her business. As many rounds as we had together I learned two things.
Coworkers are not your friends; you are at a job to work. That’s it. Find and identify personal joys and hobbies outside of work, and then find communities around those interests! Your coworkers only listen to your personal business to use it against you. I know this because Sandy was incarcerated during her time at that store. Beth would use this knowledge and tease Sandy every time a police officer (which was often) would enter the store about them coming to ARREST HER.
Secondly, hanging out with your coworkers outside of work can be risky business. This includes adding them to your social media pages. Them knowing your business can lead to your employers knowing your business, which may not always be the greatest idea! Specially if you want to keep certain aspects of your social life, to your social media community. Imagine losing your job because you lied about being sick, but your boss sees you at brunch turning up mimosas like clock work.
There are a couple different ways you can find new friends who share similar interests, and without putting your job at jeopardy! I would hate for you to also get arrested for catching your former coworker slipping after they get you fired!
You can find events advertised on social media that you find interesting, and even apps like Eventbrite & the Meet Up app. They have filters to fine tune your search! Internet searches are also your best friend! Look up local events that you want to attend and get out into your community!
As long as you do not try and be friends with your coworkers!
I have a personal policy that I will not even joke with you until I can know your work ethic. We at work to get the job done, not gonna jeopardize my livelihood for a couple he-he’s and ha-ha’s.
I really want to see you successful. Find out what you’re good at, work on that when you’re not at work. Find friends who are doing something similar, and support each other! I want to support you and your growth! As you are doing by reading and even sharing my blogs and photos!
