How much does a Photographer Charge?

Often I am asked, “How much do you charge?”

The simplest answer I have is; “It depends on the project”.

With the wide range of photography needs each respective client desires, it would be unfair to charge similar prices for projects with different scopes of services. “What are the differences? You have people, you have camera, give me pictures” you may be thinking, well let’s take a deeper look!

There are several differences between Commercial and Personal Photosessions that cause the difference in pricing. You also want to consider the photographers experience and packing.

For example photos that you are planning for content that will be monetized such as; company portraits, social media influencing, product photography, lifestyle sessions, book covers, blog photos, and etc will require more detailed & strategic planning. These sessions will come with contracts and certain agreements for a smooth transfer of the digital assets you deserve!

Where as photos for personal use such as family portraits, birthday photos, graduation sessions, and professional portrait & head shots will still require planning, but less likely to include higher prices accompanying the process.

Some things to keep in mind about the pricing for a photo-session are;

  • Commercial vs Personal use of the photos

  • Travel required by Photographer

  • Locations / Studio rental Costs

  • Models and or additional equipment costs for props

When asking how much does a photographer charge, it is important that you are clear on what your needs and requirements are before you hire anyone. It is also important so that your expectations can be met with proper diligence.

Finally, it is important to understand the value of photography and digital assets. A digital asset such as a photograph can create a connection to not only your family and friends, but also your customers and clients.

Although the best camera is the one you have, be mindful that outsourcing for skilled photographers and any service is always worth the investment. It is not about spending money, it is about saved time and quality service on things you do not have the time to learn!
